About Edward

BART Board Vice President, District 9

Edward Wright

Edward Wright represents District 9 on the BART Board of Directors and serves as the Board’s Vice President for 2026. His district covers much of San Francisco, from the Mission and SoMa to the Tenderloin, the Castro, and the Excelsior, and includes the 16th St Mission, 24th St Mission, Civic Center/UN Plaza, Powell, Montgomery, Embarcadero, and Glen Park stations.

Getting elected

In November 2024, District 9 voters elected Edward to succeed longtime director Bevan Dufty. Despite being outspent 3 to 1, he won by 23 points and carried every neighborhood in the district. In his second year on the board, his colleagues unanimously elected him Vice President.

Background

Before joining the board, Edward led transportation policy and communications for three local legislators, served as a transit strategy and communications advisor for the SFMTA, and was president of the Harvey Milk LGBTQ Democratic Club. He has worked in the labor movement, at nonprofits, and in government, writing laws, overseeing budgets to keep projects on track, and building consensus to get difficult things done.

He’s a renter, a union member, and a fourth-generation transit professional, and he has organized campaigns, marches, sit-ins, and community events across San Francisco.

Funding for public transit is broken. Our politics are broken too. These are the problems I spend every day working on, and these are the reasons I ran for BART Board.

Edward lives in SoMa with his husband Joe, their dog Stella, and their cat Maiqui.
